Reducing Bus Fatalities

The British Governed, and The City of London specifically, face the challenge of reducing bus fatalities from slips, trips, and falls. And data indicated that the cause of these fatalities is behavioural decision making mistakes from drivers and passengers. In collaboration with SoMoCo and the TfL, we set about investigating the cause of the problem more specifically and solving it with the aim of achieving 0 fatalities on buses.

The goal of the TfL was to have no fatalities on buses. They had tried to provide more information to passengers but this was not having the desired effect.

Research shows that information provision has very little impact on behaviour change. Therefore, we had to think differently. By conducting observations we saw the reason people got injured on buses was a lack of opportunity to engage in safe behaviour and a lack of specific knowledge about the risks of not engaging in safe behaviour. I came up with a simple intervention to test of providing a sound and message in the right moment for users to remind them to sit down and engage in safe behaviour.

The next steps are to analyse the data from the experiment and evaluate the impact of the intervention and build on it as necessary.
