Increasing E-Commerce Sales by 6%

A lot of companies struggle with online sales. People place the items in their shopping basket but then never complete the transaction. This costs companies millions in revenue and presents an ingoing limitation to growth. We conducted an online experiment to change the shopping experience in an attempt to increase the purchase rate once items have been placed in shopping baskets online.

The problem being faced by online retailers was a low completion rate of transactions representing lost revenue.

Research indicated that methods of online shopping did not include much personalisation post product suggestions. We found a way of changing this by allowing users to rank their favourite items (most to least) of the items they placed in their basket. This increased effort required from the user and created a greater sense of ownership over their favourite items.

Overall the project was a great initial success in a controlled environment. Therefore, the next steps from this research would be a real-life experiment in a real shopping environment to test the impact of such a user journey change on sales.
